Online auction sites
Online auctions, much like traditional auction showrooms, allow 'buyers' to bid on a variety of items listed for sale by 'sellers'.
Most auction sites, like eBay online auction, offer both new and used goods to bid on. In addition to this some items are listed with a 'Buy it now' price.
Before buying something at an online auction site, follow some of the basic online shopping tips as listed in the Discount, savings and freebies section. Many of these are still relevant to getting the best deal.
Minimizing online auction risks
Buyers are at particular risk when it comes to online auctions. Online auction sites have tried to minimize this risk, but in the end the buyers are placing their faith in the seller.
These are some basic online auction safety tips.
- Ensure a seller has a good amount of positive feedback. If a user has received little feedback, or a fair amount of negative feedback you can't ensure that they are reliable.
- Read the provided item description carefully. If you need more info contact the seller before bidding or buying.
- Be suspicious of deals that seem too good to be true - they quite possibly are.
- Paying by credit card or Paypal is generally the safest and quickest option. Never send cash or pay by money order.
- If an item is being brought from abroad be aware of the additional risks and considerations.
